Summer Sundays – Week 1
January 7 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pmFree
One of Ballarat’s most popular events – Summer Sundays – will turn up the volume in January 2018 with a fantastic line-up of Australian musical talent.
From jazz to rock’n’roll to folk music, each Sunday will feature four acts. Held in the beautiful surrounds of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, this FREE community event is presented by the City of Ballarat.
Week 1 – Sunday 7 January
Bob Evans, the ARIA winning alter ego of Jebediah frontman Kevin Mitchell, has graced the Australian music scene for more than two decades and has written some of the country’s most beloved songs.
Under the alias of Bob Evans, Mitchell has released five albums, all of which showcase the versatility and skill of this talented song smith.
Gentle, acoustic melodies prevail, enveloping the classic folk storytelling and strong emotional pull that characterises Mitchells’ substantial body of work.
Al says her genre is Happy/Sad. Her songs come from him, her and them. She has a loud laugh and wants to be friends with everyone.
You will usually see her onstage with three backing singers (‘the babes’) who sound so damn good it makes you feel a bit weird. She plays electric guitar and a ukulele comes out from time-to-time.
Her playful onstage banter is the perfect compliment to her soulful voice and wonderfully constructed songs of love and loss. Stories to which everyone can relate.
Al has played a number of festivals all around Australia and has solid knowledge of the venues in Melbourne and regional Victoria. She’s released one EP and is currently finishing the second looking to release the first single at the beginning of 2018.
FREYA JOSEPHINE HOLLICK
Freya Josephine Hollick finished 2017 with a new e.p, new single, 3 Age Music Victoria Award Nominations, a tour with Justin Townes Earle plus festival appearances at Nannup Music Festival, Boogie Festival, Gumball, Broadbeach Country Music Festival, Gympie Music Muster, Kyneton Music Festival, Dorrigo Folk Bluegrass Festival, Out on the Weekend & Queenscliff Music Festival
In her first full band show for 2018, the old-timey country songbird brings blues and honky tonk goodness that transports you back to early Appalachia, through wartime romance, the golden era of country music and into a cosmic hootenanny.
With a voice that floats between Maybelle Carter, Dolly Parton and Skip James, Freya Josephine Hollick is a lady not to be missed.
From what began as a solo project for Rhea Caldwell, Baby Blue quickly evolved into a rocking, rollicking four-piece spanning 60’s rock, folk, surf and pop.
